Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Petersen Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with McGowen Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Petersen Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. McGowen Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Petersen Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 78.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.42%), Asians (1.58%), Whites or Caucasians (1.05%) and Two or More Races (0.26%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At McGowen Elementary School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 60.35% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.64%), Whites or Caucasians (0.51%) and Two or More Races (0.51%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Petersen Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 96.32% compared to 99.24% at McGowen Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Petersen Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 48.42% of its student population compared to 21.72% at McGowen Elementary School.
Petersen Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 40.79%, gifted and talented students, 6.84%, while 9.47% are in the special education program. McGowen Elementary School bilingual students comprise 20.45%, gifted and talented students, 5.05%, and 7.58% are in the special education program.
