Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Petersen Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Highland Hts Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Petersen Elementary School has a regular student population of 380 with a 13 students/teacher ratio while Highland Hts Elementary School has 469 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.5 students/teacher ratio.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Petersen Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Highland Hts Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Petersen Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 78.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.42%), Asians (1.58%), Whites or Caucasians (1.05%) and Two or More Races (0.26%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Highland Hts Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 54.58% of student population, followed by African Americans (43.07%), Whites or Caucasians (1.49%), Two or More Races (0.64%) and Native Americans (0.21%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Petersen Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 96.32% compared to 98.51% at Highland Hts Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Petersen Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 48.42% of its student population compared to 34.75% at Highland Hts Elementary School.
Petersen Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 40.79%, gifted and talented students, 6.84%, while 9.47% are in the special education program. Highland Hts Elementary School bilingual students comprise 34.33%, gifted and talented students, 1.07%, and 12.58% are in the special education program.
