Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Pearl Hall Elementary School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Richey Elementary School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Pearl Hall Elementary School has a regular student population of 531 with a 12.4 students/teacher ratio while Richey Elementary School has 505 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.1 students/teacher ratio.
Pearl Hall Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. On the other hand, Richey Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 59 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 67 in closing performance gaps and 68 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Pearl Hall Elementary School and Richey Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Pearl Hall Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 90.96% of student population, followed by African Americans (5.27%), Whites or Caucasians (2.82%), Two or More Races (0.56%) and Native Americans (0.19%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Richey Elementary School, Hispanics make up 94.85% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (3.56%), African Americans (1.19%), Native Americans (0.20%) and Two or More Races (0.20%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Pearl Hall Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 92.84% compared to 95.25% at Richey Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Pearl Hall Elementary School has 268 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 50.47% of student population. Richey Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 318 or about 62.97% of student population.
Pearl Hall Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 47.83%, gifted and talented students, 4.14%, while 13.56% are in the special education program. Richey Elementary School bilingual students comprise 60.20%, gifted and talented students, 2.38%, and 11.49% are in the special education program.
