Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Owens Intermediate, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Miller Intermediate, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Owens Intermediate’s regular student population is 814 with a 12.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Miller Intermediate is 824 students and a 13.3 students/teacher ratio.
Owens Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 57 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Miller Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 76 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Owens Intermediate’s only distinction designation is in Mathematics. Miller Intermediate's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Owens Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 81.45% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.46%), Asians (4.79%), Whites or Caucasians (2.58%), Native Americans (1.35%) and Two or More Races (0.37%).
The student population at Miller Intermediate is also predominantly by Hispanics at 45.39%, followed by African Americans (38.96%), Asians (9.95%), Whites or Caucasians (4.13%), Native Americans (0.85%) and Two or More Races (0.61%).
Based on household incomes, Owens Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 84.40% compared to 82.65% at Miller Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Owens Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 80.22% of its student population compared to 40.53% at Miller Intermediate.
In addition, Owens Intermediate has 80.34% bilingual students, 1.47% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.27% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Miller Intermediate with 44.05% bilingual students, 9.95% gifted and talented students and 12.62% students in the special education program.
Owens Intermediate's 65 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years. Teachers at Miller Intermediate, numbering 61 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 13 years with individual teaching experience averaging 16.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Owens Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers. In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Owens Intermediate there are 57 female teachers and eight male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
