As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.

When we compared Owens Intermediate, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Killough Middle School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.

Owens Intermediate’s regular student population is 814 with a 12.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Killough Middle School is 802 students and a 12 students/teacher ratio.

Performance Indicators

Owens Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 57 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

On the other hand, Killough Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 77 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.

Distinction Designations

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Owens Intermediate’s only distinction designation is in Mathematics. Killough Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.

Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Owens Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 81.45% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.46%), Asians (4.79%), Whites or Caucasians (2.58%), Native Americans (1.35%) and Two or More Races (0.37%).

At Killough Middle School, Hispanics make up 66.08% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.46%), Asians (12.34%), Whites or Caucasians (2.87%), Native Americans (1.00%) and Two or More Races (0.25%).

Based on household incomes, Owens Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 84.40% compared to 82.92% at Killough Middle School.

In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Owens Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 80.22% of its student population compared to 45.26% at Killough Middle School.

In addition, Owens Intermediate has 80.34% bilingual students, 1.47% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.27% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Killough Middle School with 45.14% bilingual students, 9.98% gifted and talented students and 11.10% students in the special education program.
