Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Oak Hill Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Casey Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Oak Hill Elementary School has a regular student population of 666 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio while Casey Elementary School has 458 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.2 students/teacher ratio.
Oak Hill Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Casey Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 77 in student achievement, 95 in school progress, 86 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Casey Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Oak Hill Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Oak Hill Elementary School. They make up for 51.05% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (37.84%), Two or More Races (4.80%), Asians (4.35%), African Americans (1.65%) and Native Americans (0.15%).
At Casey Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 63.32% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (21.62%), African Americans (7.64%), Two or More Races (3.93%) and Asians (2.84%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Oak Hill Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 42.49% compared to 57.21% at Casey Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Oak Hill Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 38.14% of its student population compared to 15.94% at Casey Elementary School.
In addition, Oak Hill Elementary School has 43.99% bilingual students, 6.91% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.61% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Casey Elementary School with 24.24% bilingual students, 10.48% gifted and talented students and 16.38% students in the special education program.
