Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Northwood Hills Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, with Prestonwood Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Northwood Hills Elementary School has a regular student population of 405 with a 10.9 students/teacher ratio while Prestonwood Elementary School has 464 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.2 students/teacher ratio.
Northwood Hills Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for post-secondary, Northwood Hills Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions. Prestonwood Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Northwood Hills Elementary School. They make up for 50.86% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.91%), African Americans (16.54%), Two or More Races (4.94%) and Asians (0.74%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Prestonwood Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 50.86%, followed by Hispanics (30.17%), African Americans (12.28%), Asians (3.23%), Two or More Races (3.02%) and Native Americans (0.43%).
Based on household incomes, Northwood Hills Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 58.27% compared to 39.44% at Prestonwood Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Northwood Hills Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 32.84% of its student population compared to 21.98% at Prestonwood Elementary School.
In addition, Northwood Hills Elementary School has 32.84% bilingual students, 4.94% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.02% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Prestonwood Elementary School with 21.55% bilingual students, 6.90% gifted and talented students and 13.15% students in the special education program.
