When we compared Northside High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Lamar High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Northside High School’s regular student population is 1,319 with a student-teacher ratio of 16.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Lamar High School is 2,922 students and a student-teacher ratio of 21.6 students/teacher ratio.
Northside High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 78 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lamar High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 85 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 83 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only three distinction designations or awards for performance. For Northside High School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and Social Studies while Lamar High School secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Northside High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 85.14% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.57%), Whites or Caucasians (0.83%), Two or More Races (0.30%), Asians (0.08%) and Native Americans (0.08%).
The student population at Lamar High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 40.76%, followed by African Americans (26.80%), Whites or Caucasians (23.61%), Asians (5.37%), Two or More Races (2.91%) and Native Americans (0.21%).
Based on household incomes, Northside High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 95.00% compared to 47.40% at Lamar High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Northside High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 26.91% of its student population compared to 9.14% at Lamar High School.
In addition, Northside High School has 26.16% bilingual students, 13.87% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.13% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Lamar High School with 8.25% bilingual students, 34.70% gifted and talented students and 6.84% students in the special education program.
Northside High School's 82 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 13.1 years. Lamar High School's 135 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Northside High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Lamar High School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 25 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 47 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 15 beginning teachers.
Northside High School has four special education teachers assisted by 8 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Lamar High School has three special education teachers and 6 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
