High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Northside High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Hcc Life Skills Program, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Northside High School’s regular student population is 1,319 with a student-teacher ratio of 16.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Hcc Life Skills Program is 74 students and a student-teacher ratio of 4.1 students/teacher ratio.
Northside High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 78 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for Hcc Life Skills Program due to the on-going impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Northside High School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and Social Studies. Hcc Life Skills Program did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Northside High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 85.14% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.57%), Whites or Caucasians (0.83%), Two or More Races (0.30%), Asians (0.08%) and Native Americans (0.08%).
At Hcc Life Skills Program, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 55.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.78%), Whites or Caucasians (9.46%) and Asians (1.35%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, Northside High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 95.00% compared to 45.95% at Hcc Life Skills Program.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Northside High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 26.91% of its student population compared to 5.41% at Hcc Life Skills Program.
Northside High School 12.13% are in the special education program, 13.87% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 26.16% students. Hcc Life Skills Program has no gifted and talented student, while 100.00% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 2.70% students.
Northside High School's 82 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 13.1 years. Hcc Life Skills Program's 18 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 12.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 17.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Northside High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Hcc Life Skills Program has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Northside High School employs 49 female teachers and 33 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs five staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Hcc Life Skills Program employs 13 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs two staff members in the school administration department.
