Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Milne Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Condit Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Milne Elementary School has a regular student population of 516 with a 19 students/teacher ratio while Condit Elementary School has 728 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.8 students/teacher ratio.
Milne Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 54 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Condit Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Milne Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Milne Elementary School. They make up for 50.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (45.74%), Whites or Caucasians (2.13%), Two or More Races (0.78%) and Asians (0.39%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Condit Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 33.65%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.10%), Asians (19.37%), African Americans (7.97%) and Two or More Races (5.63%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Milne Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 93.02% compared to 36.54% at Condit Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Milne Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 38.37% of its student population compared to 26.51% at Condit Elementary School.
In addition, Milne Elementary School has 37.79% bilingual students, 1.94% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.69% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Condit Elementary School with 33.93% bilingual students, 28.43% gifted and talented students and 10.99% students in the special education program.
