Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Melillo Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with San Jacinto Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Melillo Middle School’s regular student population is 606 with a 11.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at San Jacinto Intermediate is 630 students and a 12.3 students/teacher ratio.
Melillo Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 81 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, San Jacinto Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 74 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 82 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only five distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. For Melillo Middle School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while San Jacinto Intermediate secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Melillo Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 69.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.35%), Asians (6.60%), Whites or Caucasians (6.11%), Two or More Races (1.49%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
At San Jacinto Intermediate, Hispanics make up 89.05% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (6.03%), African Americans (4.13%), Two or More Races (0.48%) and Asians (0.32%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Melillo Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 61.88% compared to 90.16% at San Jacinto Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Melillo Middle School has 131 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.62% of student population. San Jacinto Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 211 or about 33.49% of student population.
Melillo Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 15.84%, gifted and talented students, 11.22%, while 15.18% are in the special education program. San Jacinto Intermediate bilingual students comprise 29.37%, gifted and talented students, 8.41%, and 17.14% are in the special education program.
Melillo Middle School's 54 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years. Teachers at San Jacinto Intermediate, numbering 51 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Melillo Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. San Jacinto Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Melillo Middle School there are 48 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At San Jacinto Intermediate there are 31 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
