Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Melillo Middle School’s five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Miller Intermediate's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Melillo Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 69.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.35%), Asians (6.60%), Whites or Caucasians (6.11%), Two or More Races (1.49%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
At Miller Intermediate, Hispanics make up 91.25% of student population, followed by African Americans (5.34%), Whites or Caucasians (2.84%), Asians (0.23%), Two or More Races (0.23%) and Native Americans (0.11%).
Based on household incomes, the Melillo Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 61.88% compared to 85.45% at Miller Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Melillo Middle School has 131 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.62% of student population. Miller Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 342 or about 38.86% of student population.
Melillo Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 15.84%, gifted and talented students, 11.22%, while 15.18% are in the special education program. Miller Intermediate bilingual students comprise 43.98%, gifted and talented students, 9.66%, and 10.34% are in the special education program.
Melillo Middle School's 54 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years. Teachers at Miller Intermediate, numbering 63 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Melillo Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
