Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Mathews Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Harris Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Mathews Elementary School has a regular student population of 332 with a 13.8 students/teacher ratio while Harris Elementary School has 399 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.3 students/teacher ratio.
Mathews Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Harris Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 56 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Mathews Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Harris Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Mathews Elementary School. They make up for 40.96% of student population, followed by Hispanics (36.45%), African Americans (8.43%), Asians (7.23%), Two or More Races (6.33%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
At Harris Elementary School, Hispanics make up 80.45% of student population, followed by African Americans (12.78%), Whites or Caucasians (3.01%), Two or More Races (2.51%) and Asians (1.25%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Mathews Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 28.92% compared to 91.73% at Harris Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mathews Elementary School has 39 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.75% of student population. Harris Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 257 or about 64.41% of student population.
Mathews Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 10.54%, gifted and talented students, 12.05%, while 9.04% are in the special education program. Harris Elementary School bilingual students comprise 70.68%, gifted and talented students, 5.26%, and 13.53% are in the special education program.

The 32 teachers at Harris Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years.
