Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Mata Intermediate’s two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Killough Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Mata Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 68.94% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.16%), Whites or Caucasians (3.84%), Asians (3.84%), Native Americans (1.73%) and Two or More Races (0.25%).
At Killough Middle School, Hispanics make up 66.08% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.46%), Asians (12.34%), Whites or Caucasians (2.87%), Native Americans (1.00%) and Two or More Races (0.25%).
Based on household incomes, Mata Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 86.39% compared to 82.92% at Killough Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mata Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 66.34% of its student population compared to 45.26% at Killough Middle School.
In addition, Mata Intermediate has 69.18% bilingual students, 5.94% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.85% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Killough Middle School with 45.14% bilingual students, 9.98% gifted and talented students and 11.10% students in the special education program.
Mata Intermediate's 66 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.8 years. Teachers at Killough Middle School, numbering 67 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 10.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years.
Of its teaching staff, Mata Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 15 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Killough Middle School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Mata Intermediate there are 52 female teachers and 14 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
