Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Marshall Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sutton Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Marshall Elementary School has a regular student population of 684 with a 16.2 students/teacher ratio while Sutton Elementary School has 1,008 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio.
Marshall Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 56 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sutton Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Sutton Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and with 25% student progress. Marshall Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Marshall Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 69.15% of student population, followed by African Americans (29.53%), Whites or Caucasians (0.58%), Two or More Races (0.58%) and Native Americans (0.15%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Sutton Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.12% of student population, followed by Asians (11.31%), African Americans (8.93%), Whites or Caucasians (5.56%), Two or More Races (0.79%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
Based on household incomes, Marshall Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 96.93% compared to 94.84% at Sutton Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Marshall Elementary School has 329 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 48.10% of student population. Sutton Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 745 or about 73.91% of student population.
In addition, Marshall Elementary School has 43.86% bilingual students, 5.26% are in the gifted and talented program, while 7.46% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sutton Elementary School with 73.02% bilingual students, 6.25% gifted and talented students and 8.04% students in the special education program.
