Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. Mahanay Elementary School has a regular student population of 534 with a 11.1 students/teacher ratio while Smith Elementary School has 650 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.7 students/teacher ratio.
Mahanay Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 90 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Mahanay Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Smith Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Mahanay Elementary School. They make up for 36.33% of student population, followed by Hispanics (36.52%), Asians (23.60%), Whites or Caucasians (3.18%), Native Americans (0.19%) and Two or More Races (0.19%).
At Smith Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 62.46% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.54%), Asians (10.15%), Whites or Caucasians (3.23%), Native Americans (0.31%) and Two or More Races (0.15%).
Based on household incomes, Mahanay Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 87.83% compared to 86.92% at Smith Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mahanay Elementary School has 264 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 49.44% of student population. Smith Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 419 or about 64.46% of student population.
Mahanay Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 48.88%, gifted and talented students, 1.50%, while 15.54% are in the special education program. Smith Elementary School bilingual students comprise 66.00%, gifted and talented students, 1.23%, and 8.46% are in the special education program.
