Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Mahanay Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Bush Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Mahanay Elementary School has a regular student population of 534 with a 11.1 students/teacher ratio while Bush Elementary School has 834 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.6 students/teacher ratio.
Mahanay Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 90 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Bush Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only four distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. For Mahanay Elementary School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps while Bush Elementary School secured in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Mahanay Elementary School. They make up for 36.33% of student population, followed by Hispanics (36.52%), Asians (23.60%), Whites or Caucasians (3.18%), Native Americans (0.19%) and Two or More Races (0.19%).
At Bush Elementary School, Hispanics make up 86.33% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.83%), Asians (1.80%), Whites or Caucasians (1.44%) and Native Americans (0.48%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Mahanay Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 87.83% compared to 88.73% at Bush Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mahanay Elementary School has 264 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 49.44% of student population. Bush Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 689 or about 82.61% of student population.
Mahanay Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 48.88%, gifted and talented students, 1.50%, while 15.54% are in the special education program. Bush Elementary School bilingual students comprise 85.13%, gifted and talented students, 0.72%, and 6.35% are in the special education program.
48 teachers employed at Mahanay Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 10.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years. The 66 teachers at Bush Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Mahanay Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Bush Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Mahanay Elementary School there are 46 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Bush Elementary School there are 52 female teachers and 13 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
