Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Mahanay Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Boone Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Mahanay Elementary School has a regular student population of 534 with a 11.1 students/teacher ratio while Boone Elementary School has 639 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.1 students/teacher ratio.
Mahanay Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 90 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Boone Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Mahanay Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Boone Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Mahanay Elementary School. They make up for 36.33% of student population, followed by Hispanics (36.52%), Asians (23.60%), Whites or Caucasians (3.18%), Native Americans (0.19%) and Two or More Races (0.19%).
At Boone Elementary School, Hispanics make up 68.70% of student population, followed by African Americans (24.26%), Asians (4.07%), Whites or Caucasians (2.50%), Native Americans (0.31%) and Two or More Races (0.16%).
Based on household incomes, the Mahanay Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 87.83% compared to 89.67% at Boone Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mahanay Elementary School has 264 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 49.44% of student population. Boone Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 425 or about 66.51% of student population.
In addition, Mahanay Elementary School has 48.88% bilingual students, 1.50% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.54% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Boone Elementary School with 66.35% bilingual students, 4.23% gifted and talented students and 10.49% students in the special education program.
