Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared M L King Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, with J T Brackenridge Elementary School, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
M L King Academy has a regular student population of 261 with a 12.2 students/teacher ratio while J T Brackenridge Elementary School has 464 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.7 students/teacher ratio.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for M L King Academy and J T Brackenridge Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at M L King Academy. They make up for 49.81% of student population, followed by African Americans (45.21%), Two or More Races (2.30%), Whites or Caucasians (1.53%), Asians (0.38%) and Native Americans (0.38%).
At J T Brackenridge Elementary School, Hispanics make up 94.61% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.37%), Asians (1.29%), Whites or Caucasians (1.08%), Two or More Races (0.43%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
Based on household incomes, the M L King Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 94.25% compared to 98.28% at J T Brackenridge Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, M L King Academy has 5 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 1.92% of student population. J T Brackenridge Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 55 or about 11.85% of student population.
M L King Academy’s bilingual students comprise 0.38%, gifted and talented students, 4.60%, while 17.62% are in the special education program. J T Brackenridge Elementary School bilingual students comprise 14.01%, gifted and talented students, 1.72%, and 11.21% are in the special education program.
21 teachers employed at M L King Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years. The 33 teachers at J T Brackenridge Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.6 years.
