Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared M L King Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, with Beacon Hill Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
M L King Academy has a regular student population of 261 with a 12.2 students/teacher ratio while Beacon Hill Academy has 370 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.2 students/teacher ratio.
M L King Academy earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 56 in student achievement, 74 in school progress and 68 in closing performance gaps. It scored 72 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Beacon Hill Academy earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for M L King Academy and Beacon Hill Academy are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at M L King Academy. They make up for 49.81% of student population, followed by African Americans (45.21%), Two or More Races (2.30%), Whites or Caucasians (1.53%), Asians (0.38%) and Native Americans (0.38%).
At Beacon Hill Academy, Hispanics make up 91.35% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.05%), Whites or Caucasians (3.24%), Two or More Races (1.08%) and Native Americans (0.27%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, M L King Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 94.25% compared to 93.51% at Beacon Hill Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, M L King Academy has 5 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 1.92% of student population. Beacon Hill Academy has significantly more ELLs at 102 or about 27.57% of student population.
M L King Academy’s bilingual students comprise 0.38%, gifted and talented students, 4.60%, while 17.62% are in the special education program. Beacon Hill Academy bilingual students comprise 33.51%, gifted and talented students, 4.32%, and 11.35% are in the special education program.
