Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Lively Elementary School, which is a part of IRVING ISD, with Townley Elementary School, which is a part of IRVING ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Lively Elementary School has a regular student population of 757 with a 15.1 students/teacher ratio while Townley Elementary School has 670 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
Lively Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 54 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 69 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Townley Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 84 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Lively Elementary School and Townley Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Lively Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 73.05% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (13.61%), African Americans (5.68%), Native Americans (4.23%), Asians (1.59%) and Two or More Races (1.45%).
At Townley Elementary School, Hispanics make up 76.12% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (13.88%), African Americans (4.78%), Native Americans (2.84%), Asians (1.19%) and Two or More Races (0.90%).
Based on household incomes, Lively Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 86.66% compared to 86.27% at Townley Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lively Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 55.88% of its student population compared to 50.30% at Townley Elementary School.
In addition, Lively Elementary School has 56.14% bilingual students, 11.10% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.59% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Townley Elementary School with 52.24% bilingual students, 11.64% gifted and talented students and 8.51% students in the special education program.
50 teachers employed at Lively Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years. The 49 teachers at Townley Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Lively Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Townley Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Lively Elementary School there are 47 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
