Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Lively Elementary School, which is a part of IRVING ISD, with Keyes Elementary School, which is a part of IRVING ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Lively Elementary School has a regular student population of 757 with a 15.1 students/teacher ratio while Keyes Elementary School has 665 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.9 students/teacher ratio.
Lively Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 54 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 69 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Keyes Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 64 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Lively Elementary School and Keyes Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Lively Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 73.05% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (13.61%), African Americans (5.68%), Native Americans (4.23%), Asians (1.59%) and Two or More Races (1.45%).
At Keyes Elementary School, Hispanics make up 82.86% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (9.17%), African Americans (3.61%), Native Americans (3.01%), Asians (0.75%) and Two or More Races (0.30%).
Based on household incomes, the Lively Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 86.66% compared to 93.98% at Keyes Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lively Elementary School has 423 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 55.88% of student population. Keyes Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 455 or about 68.42% of student population.
In addition, Lively Elementary School has 56.14% bilingual students, 11.10% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.59% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Keyes Elementary School with 70.98% bilingual students, 12.48% gifted and talented students and 6.47% students in the special education program.
50 teachers employed at Lively Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years. The 44 teachers at Keyes Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Lively Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Keyes Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Lively Elementary School there are 47 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Keyes Elementary School there are 39 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
