Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Leonard Middle School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, with Young Women's Leadership Academy, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Leonard Middle School’s regular student population is 665 with a 13.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Young Women's Leadership Academy is 467 students and a 14 students/teacher ratio.
Leonard Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 52 in student achievement, 58 in school progress and 64 in closing performance gaps. It scored 59 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Young Women's Leadership Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 96 in student achievement, 95 in school progress, 85 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Young Women's Leadership Academy's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies and post-secondary. Leonard Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Leonard Middle School. They make up for 48.42% of student population, followed by African Americans (36.54%), Whites or Caucasians (10.38%), Two or More Races (3.76%), Asians (0.75%) and Native Americans (0.15%).
At Young Women's Leadership Academy, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 61.67% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.70%), Whites or Caucasians (13.06%), Asians (3.43%) and Two or More Races (2.14%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Leonard Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 93.38% compared to 73.02% at Young Women's Leadership Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Leonard Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 26.92% of its student population compared to 19.49% at Young Women's Leadership Academy.
In addition, Leonard Middle School has 24.96% bilingual students, 8.42% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.48% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Young Women's Leadership Academy with 18.63% bilingual students, 52.46% gifted and talented students and 1.28% students in the special education program.
Leonard Middle School's 49 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.6 years. Teachers at Young Women's Leadership Academy, numbering 33 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Leonard Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Young Women's Leadership Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Leonard Middle School there are 26 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Young Women's Leadership Academy there are 25 female teachers and eight male teachers. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
