When we compared Lanier High School, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, with Burbank High School, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Lanier High School’s regular student population is 1,467 with a student-teacher ratio of 16.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Burbank High School is 1,321 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.6 students/teacher ratio.
Lanier High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 71 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Burbank High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Lanier High School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Social Studies and post-secondary. Burbank High School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Lanier High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 95.91% of student population, followed by African Americans (1.77%), Asians (1.09%), Whites or Caucasians (0.89%), Native Americans (0.20%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
At Burbank High School, Hispanics make up 97.80% of student population, followed by African Americans (0.83%), Whites or Caucasians (0.83%), Two or More Races (0.23%), Asians (0.15%) and Native Americans (0.08%).
Based on household incomes, Lanier High School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 96.05% compared to 90.39% at Burbank High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lanier High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 23.31% of its student population compared to 20.14% at Burbank High School.
In addition, Lanier High School has 21.40% bilingual students, 5.32% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.38% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Burbank High School with 18.24% bilingual students, 9.46% gifted and talented students and 14.76% students in the special education program.
Lanier High School's 89 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 9.1 years. Burbank High School's 84 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 8.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Lanier High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 27 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers. Burbank High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 24 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 22 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 19 beginning teachers.
Lanier High School has five special education teachers assisted by 14 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Burbank High School has 12 special education teachers and 12 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
