Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Lamkin Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Wells Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Lamkin Elementary School has a regular student population of 892 with a 15.6 students/teacher ratio while Wells Elementary School has 1,630 students and a student-teacher ratio of 21.3 students/teacher ratio.
Lamkin Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Wells Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Lamkin Elementary School and Wells Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Lamkin Elementary School. They make up for 35.09% of student population, followed by African Americans (26.57%), Whites or Caucasians (24.66%), Asians (6.95%), Two or More Races (5.83%) and Native Americans (0.90%).
The student population at Wells Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 39.51%, followed by Asians (23.93%), Hispanics (20.12%), African Americans (10.18%), Two or More Races (5.95%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
Based on household incomes, Lamkin Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 67.71% compared to 11.72% at Wells Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lamkin Elementary School has 86 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 9.64% of student population. Wells Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 163 or about 10.00% of student population.
In addition, Lamkin Elementary School has 9.53% bilingual students, 3.25% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.58% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Wells Elementary School with 9.14% bilingual students, 13.44% gifted and talented students and 7.24% students in the special education program.
57 teachers employed at Lamkin Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years. The 76 teachers at Wells Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Lamkin Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Wells Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 23 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 22 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Lamkin Elementary School there are 51 female teachers and six male teachers. At Wells Elementary School there are 75 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
