Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Lamar Elementary School, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, with Woodlawn Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Lamar Elementary School has a regular student population of 306 with a 11.8 students/teacher ratio while Woodlawn Academy has 569 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.7 students/teacher ratio.
Lamar Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Woodlawn Academy earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 58 in student achievement, 75 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Lamar Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Woodlawn Academy did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Lamar Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 76.14% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (18.30%), African Americans (3.27%), Two or More Races (1.96%) and Asians (0.33%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Woodlawn Academy, Hispanics make up 93.32% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.34%), Whites or Caucasians (3.16%) and Two or More Races (0.18%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Lamar Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 70.59% compared to 82.07% at Woodlawn Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lamar Elementary School has 68 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 22.22% of student population. Woodlawn Academy has significantly more ELLs at 123 or about 21.62% of student population.
In addition, Lamar Elementary School has 29.74% bilingual students, 10.13% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.05% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Woodlawn Academy with 22.85% bilingual students, 12.13% gifted and talented students and 10.02% students in the special education program.

The 38 teachers at Woodlawn Academy have been serving the school for an average of 7.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Lamar Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Woodlawn Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Lamar Elementary School there are 23 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
