When we compared L G Pinkston High School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Hillcrest High School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
L G Pinkston High School’s regular student population is 1,339 with a student-teacher ratio of 16 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Hillcrest High School is 1,660 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17 students/teacher ratio.
L G Pinkston High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 71 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. L G Pinkston High School’s only distinction designation is in Read/ELA. Hillcrest High School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in L G Pinkston High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 74.53% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.78%), Whites or Caucasians (0.97%), Asians (0.60%), Native Americans (0.60%) and Two or More Races (0.52%).
At Hillcrest High School, Hispanics make up 70.18% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.96%), Whites or Caucasians (10.78%), Asians (1.45%), Two or More Races (1.14%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
Based on household incomes, L G Pinkston High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 92.68% compared to 70.12% at Hillcrest High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, L G Pinkston High School has 604 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 45.11% of student population. Hillcrest High School has significantly more ELLs at 788 or about 47.47% of student population.
In addition, L G Pinkston High School has 42.20% bilingual students, 13.14% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.04% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Hillcrest High School with 44.82% bilingual students, 16.45% gifted and talented students and 7.95% students in the special education program.
L G Pinkston High School's 83 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 7.6 years. Hillcrest High School's 97 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 9.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, L G Pinkston High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 39 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
