Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Knox Junior High School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Travis Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Knox Junior High School’s regular student population is 1,378 with a 18.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Travis Intermediate is 596 students and a 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
Knox Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Travis Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Travis Intermediate's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary. Knox Junior High School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Knox Junior High School. They make up for 50.44% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.37%), African Americans (9.29%), Asians (6.53%), Two or More Races (4.50%) and Native Americans (0.58%).
At Travis Intermediate, Hispanics make up 76.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.26%), Whites or Caucasians (7.55%), Two or More Races (1.68%), Native Americans (0.50%) and Asians (0.34%).
Based on household incomes, the Knox Junior High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 28.23% compared to 92.11% at Travis Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Knox Junior High School has 135 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 9.80% of student population. Travis Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 344 or about 57.72% of student population.
Knox Junior High School’s bilingual students comprise 9.72%, gifted and talented students, 15.46%, while 7.26% are in the special education program. Travis Intermediate bilingual students comprise 57.89%, gifted and talented students, 2.35%, and 15.94% are in the special education program.
Knox Junior High School's 76 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years. Teachers at Travis Intermediate, numbering 44 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Knox Junior High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Travis Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Knox Junior High School there are 53 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Travis Intermediate there are 38 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
