Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Kleb Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, with Wunderlich Intermediate, which is a part of KLEIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Kleb Intermediate’s regular student population is 1,438 with a 16.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Wunderlich Intermediate is 1,364 students and a 13.1 students/teacher ratio.
Kleb Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 83 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Wunderlich Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Kleb Intermediate and Wunderlich Intermediate are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Kleb Intermediate. They make up for 37.69% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.24%), African Americans (16.06%), Asians (7.93%), Two or More Races (4.45%) and Native Americans (0.35%).
At Wunderlich Intermediate, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 63.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.51%), Asians (7.18%), Whites or Caucasians (3.67%), Two or More Races (2.79%) and Native Americans (0.51%).
Based on household incomes, the Kleb Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 50.00% compared to 76.98% at Wunderlich Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Kleb Intermediate has 193 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.42% of student population. Wunderlich Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 415 or about 30.43% of student population.
Kleb Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 13.07%, gifted and talented students, 8.28%, while 11.96% are in the special education program. Wunderlich Intermediate bilingual students comprise 29.62%, gifted and talented students, 4.47%, and 12.83% are in the special education program.
Kleb Intermediate's 86 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years. Teachers at Wunderlich Intermediate, numbering 104 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Kleb Intermediate has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 33 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 26 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Wunderlich Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 32 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Kleb Intermediate there are 62 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
