Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Killough Middle School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Owens Intermediate, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Killough Middle School’s regular student population is 802 with a 12 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Owens Intermediate is 814 students and a 12.4 students/teacher ratio.
Killough Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Owens Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 57 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Killough Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Owens Intermediate’s only distinction designation is in Mathematics.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Killough Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 66.08% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.46%), Asians (12.34%), Whites or Caucasians (2.87%), Native Americans (1.00%) and Two or More Races (0.25%).
At Owens Intermediate, Hispanics make up 81.45% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.46%), Asians (4.79%), Whites or Caucasians (2.58%), Native Americans (1.35%) and Two or More Races (0.37%).
Based on household incomes, the Killough Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 82.92% compared to 84.40% at Owens Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Killough Middle School has 363 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 45.26% of student population. Owens Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 653 or about 80.22% of student population.
Killough Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 45.14%, gifted and talented students, 9.98%, while 11.10% are in the special education program. Owens Intermediate bilingual students comprise 80.34%, gifted and talented students, 1.47%, and 13.27% are in the special education program.
Killough Middle School's 67 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years. Teachers at Owens Intermediate, numbering 65 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
Of its teaching staff, Killough Middle School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Owens Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Killough Middle School there are 43 female teachers and 23 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
At Owens Intermediate there are 57 female teachers and eight male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
