It is in this area where the two schools differ. Killough Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Mata Intermediate’s two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Killough Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 66.08% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.46%), Asians (12.34%), Whites or Caucasians (2.87%), Native Americans (1.00%) and Two or More Races (0.25%).

Based on household incomes, the Killough Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 82.92% compared to 86.39% at Mata Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Killough Middle School has 363 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 45.26% of student population. Mata Intermediate has significantly more ELLs at 536 or about 66.34% of student population.
Killough Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 45.14%, gifted and talented students, 9.98%, while 11.10% are in the special education program. Mata Intermediate bilingual students comprise 69.18%, gifted and talented students, 5.94%, and 14.85% are in the special education program.
