Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Killian Middle School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, with Griffin Middle School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Killian Middle School’s regular student population is 1,033 with a 16 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Griffin Middle School is 752 students and a 13.8 students/teacher ratio.
Killian Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 85 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Griffin Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Killian Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and post-secondary. Griffin Middle School’s only distinction designation is in Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Killian Middle School. They make up for 35.24% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (25.07%), Hispanics (24.49%), African Americans (11.81%), Two or More Races (3.29%) and Native Americans (0.10%).
The student population at Griffin Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 39.36%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.44%), African Americans (14.76%), Two or More Races (5.72%), Asians (5.19%) and Native Americans (0.53%).
Based on household incomes, the Killian Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 27.40% compared to 46.01% at Griffin Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Killian Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 17.52% of its student population compared to 18.88% at Griffin Middle School.
Killian Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 17.33%, gifted and talented students, 20.04%, while 12.68% are in the special education program. Griffin Middle School bilingual students comprise 18.48%, gifted and talented students, 13.03%, and 21.68% are in the special education program.
Killian Middle School's 64 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.8 years. Teachers at Griffin Middle School, numbering 54 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Killian Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Griffin Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Killian Middle School there are 51 female teachers and 13 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Griffin Middle School there are 39 female teachers and 15 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 18 special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
