Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Kealing Middle School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Martin Middle School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Kealing Middle School’s regular student population is 1,304 with a 16.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Martin Middle School is 455 students and a 11.7 students/teacher ratio.
Kealing Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 80 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Martin Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 52 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 70 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Kealing Middle School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and post-secondary. Martin Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Kealing Middle School. They make up for 36.81% of student population, followed by Hispanics (31.44%), Asians (14.42%), African Americans (10.51%) and Two or More Races (6.83%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Martin Middle School, Hispanics make up 78.24% of student population, followed by African Americans (16.92%), Whites or Caucasians (1.76%), Asians (1.76%), Two or More Races (0.88%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
Based on household incomes, the Kealing Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 32.75% compared to 94.51% at Martin Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Kealing Middle School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 13.34% of its student population compared to 35.60% at Martin Middle School.
Kealing Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 13.27%, gifted and talented students, 52.22%, while 10.35% are in the special education program. Martin Middle School bilingual students comprise 36.92%, gifted and talented students, 6.15%, and 26.15% are in the special education program.
Kealing Middle School's 77 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years. Teachers at Martin Middle School, numbering 39 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years.
