Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Jones Ec/Pk/K, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, with Carter Academy, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Jones Ec/Pk/K has a regular student population of 776 with a 16.2 students/teacher ratio while Carter Academy has 598 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio.
Jones Ec/Pk/K earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89). It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education only.
On the other hand, Carter Academy earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Jones Ec/Pk/K and Carter Academy are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Jones Ec/Pk/K. They make up for 46.01% of student population, followed by Hispanics (46.52%), Whites or Caucasians (2.84%), Two or More Races (2.45%) and Asians (1.03%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Carter Academy, Hispanics make up 68.56% of student population, followed by African Americans (20.57%), Asians (4.85%), Whites or Caucasians (4.35%), Two or More Races (1.17%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, Jones Ec/Pk/K’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 91.24% compared to 87.63% at Carter Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Jones Ec/Pk/K has 223 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 28.74% of student population. Carter Academy has significantly more ELLs at 288 or about 48.16% of student population.
Jones Ec/Pk/K has no gifted and talented student, while 10.18% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 27.58% students. Carter Academy 10.54% are in the special education program, 5.52% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 46.82% students.
48 teachers employed at Jones Ec/Pk/K have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years. The 40 teachers at Carter Academy have been serving the school for an average of 10.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Jones Ec/Pk/K has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Carter Academy has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Jones Ec/Pk/K there are 44 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
