Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Jane Long Elementary School, which is a part of LAMAR CISD, with Taylor Ray Elementary School, which is a part of LAMAR CISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Jane Long Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Post-Secondary. Taylor Ray Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Jane Long Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 69.23% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.76%), Whites or Caucasians (6.57%), Two or More Races (2.25%) and Asians (0.19%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Taylor Ray Elementary School, Hispanics make up 85.01% of student population, followed by African Americans (8.04%), Whites or Caucasians (5.67%), Two or More Races (1.10%) and Native Americans (0.18%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Jane Long Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 90.81% compared to 91.04% at Taylor Ray Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Jane Long Elementary School has 130 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 24.39% of student population. Taylor Ray Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 183 or about 33.46% of student population.
In addition, Jane Long Elementary School has 24.20% bilingual students, 5.82% are in the gifted and talented program, while 23.26% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Taylor Ray Elementary School with 33.27% bilingual students, 6.03% gifted and talented students and 19.56% students in the special education program.
