Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Hopper Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Thornton Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Hopper Middle School’s regular student population is 1,047 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Thornton Middle School is 1,535 students and a 15.2 students/teacher ratio.
Hopper Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Thornton Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Thornton Middle School's one out of seven distinction is in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA). Hopper Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Hopper Middle School. They make up for 52.82% of student population, followed by African Americans (34.19%), Whites or Caucasians (6.49%), Asians (3.06%), Two or More Races (2.58%) and Native Americans (0.86%).
At Thornton Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 54.79% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.34%), Whites or Caucasians (5.67%), Asians (4.56%), Two or More Races (2.54%) and Native Americans (0.78%).
Based on household incomes, Hopper Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 80.80% compared to 79.54% at Thornton Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hopper Middle School has 177 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 16.91% of student population. Thornton Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 266 or about 17.33% of student population.
In addition, Hopper Middle School has 15.76% bilingual students, 3.63% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.46% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Thornton Middle School with 15.05% bilingual students, 3.71% gifted and talented students and 11.60% students in the special education program.
Hopper Middle School's 71 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years. At Thornton Middle School there are 66 female teachers and 34 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by 19 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
