Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Hopper Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Anthony Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Hopper Middle School’s regular student population is 1,047 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Anthony Middle School is 1,276 students and a 18.2 students/teacher ratio.
Hopper Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Anthony Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 92 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Anthony Middle School's one out of seven distinction is in Science. Hopper Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Hopper Middle School. They make up for 52.82% of student population, followed by African Americans (34.19%), Whites or Caucasians (6.49%), Asians (3.06%), Two or More Races (2.58%) and Native Americans (0.86%).
The student population at Anthony Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 29.31%, followed by African Americans (26.18%), Whites or Caucasians (22.18%), Asians (18.10%), Two or More Races (4.00%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
Based on household incomes, Hopper Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 80.80% compared to 36.52% at Anthony Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hopper Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 16.91% of its student population compared to 5.72% at Anthony Middle School.
In addition, Hopper Middle School has 15.76% bilingual students, 3.63% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.46% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Anthony Middle School with 4.62% bilingual students, 16.14% gifted and talented students and 7.60% students in the special education program.
Hopper Middle School's 71 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years. Teachers at Anthony Middle School, numbering 70 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Hopper Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 24 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Anthony Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Hopper Middle School there are 51 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 17 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and 14 more working as school support staff.
