Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Hicks Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Landis Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Hicks Elementary School has a regular student population of 712 with a 12.7 students/teacher ratio while Landis Elementary School has 606 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.9 students/teacher ratio.
Hicks Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Hicks Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and with 25% student progress. Landis Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Hicks Elementary School. They make up for 47.61% of student population, followed by African Americans (32.30%), Asians (16.57%), Whites or Caucasians (2.95%) and Two or More Races (0.28%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Landis Elementary School, Hispanics make up 79.04% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.84%), Whites or Caucasians (2.81%), Asians (1.82%) and Native Americans (0.50%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Hicks Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 85.39% compared to 90.76% at Landis Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hicks Elementary School has 419 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 58.85% of student population. Landis Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 458 or about 75.58% of student population.
Hicks Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 58.85%, gifted and talented students, 1.97%, while 13.76% are in the special education program. Landis Elementary School bilingual students comprise 76.07%, gifted and talented students, 0.50%, and 11.06% are in the special education program.

The 51 teachers at Landis Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.8 years.
