Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Hamilton Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Moore Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Hamilton Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,058 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio while Moore Elementary School has 1,000 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.3 students/teacher ratio.
Hamilton Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Hamilton Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Moore Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Hamilton Elementary School. They make up for 54.44% of student population, followed by Hispanics (21.08%), African Americans (10.11%), Asians (10.02%), Two or More Races (4.06%) and Native Americans (0.28%).
The student population at Moore Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 30.50%, followed by Hispanics (27.50%), African Americans (26.30%), Asians (10.90%), Two or More Races (4.50%) and Native Americans (0.20%).
Based on household incomes, the Hamilton Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 22.40% compared to 54.10% at Moore Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hamilton Elementary School has 84 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 7.94% of student population. Moore Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 102 or about 10.20% of student population.
Hamilton Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 7.56%, gifted and talented students, 10.87%, while 11.72% are in the special education program. Moore Elementary School bilingual students comprise 9.70%, gifted and talented students, 8.20%, and 10.20% are in the special education program.
