As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Guyer High School, which is a part of DENTON ISD, with The Lagrone Academy, which is a part of DENTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Guyer High School’s regular student population is 2,614 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at The Lagrone Academy is 198 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.5 students/teacher ratio.
Guyer High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 81 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, The Lagrone Academy earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 86 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 86 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Guyer High School's one out of seven distinction is in 25% closing performance gaps. The Lagrone Academy did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Guyer High School. They make up for 55.05% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.12%), African Americans (8.34%), Asians (4.36%), Two or More Races (3.29%) and Native Americans (0.69%).
The student population at The Lagrone Academy is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 47.98%, followed by Hispanics (35.35%), African Americans (12.63%), Asians (1.52%), Two or More Races (1.52%) and Native Americans (1.01%).
Based on household incomes, the Guyer High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 24.45% compared to 38.38% at The Lagrone Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Guyer High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 8.53% of its student population compared to 11.62% at The Lagrone Academy.
Guyer High School’s bilingual students comprise 8.42%, gifted and talented students, 14.50%, while 8.49% are in the special education program. The Lagrone Academy bilingual students comprise 11.62%, gifted and talented students, 8.08%, and 10.10% are in the special education program.
Guyer High School's 176 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.4 years. The Lagrone Academy's 17 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 8.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Guyer High School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 36 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 59 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 40 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 27 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers. The Lagrone Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, two teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while two teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Guyer High School employs 101 female teachers and 74 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 23 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, The Lagrone Academy employs 11 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs zero staff members in the school administration department and one more working as school support staff.
