Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Griggs Ec/Pk/K, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, with Carter Academy, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Griggs Ec/Pk/K has a regular student population of 767 with a 18.6 students/teacher ratio while Carter Academy has 598 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio.
Griggs Ec/Pk/K earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89). It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education only.
On the other hand, Carter Academy earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Griggs Ec/Pk/K and Carter Academy are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Griggs Ec/Pk/K. They make up for 64.54% of student population, followed by African Americans (30.90%), Whites or Caucasians (1.56%), Two or More Races (1.56%), Asians (1.04%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
At Carter Academy, Hispanics make up 68.56% of student population, followed by African Americans (20.57%), Asians (4.85%), Whites or Caucasians (4.35%), Two or More Races (1.17%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, Griggs Ec/Pk/K’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 92.70% compared to 87.63% at Carter Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Griggs Ec/Pk/K has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 53.98% of its student population compared to 48.16% at Carter Academy.
Griggs Ec/Pk/K has no gifted and talented student, while 8.47% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 53.98% students. Carter Academy 10.54% are in the special education program, 5.52% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 46.82% students.
41 teachers employed at Griggs Ec/Pk/K have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.6 years. The 40 teachers at Carter Academy have been serving the school for an average of 10.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Griggs Ec/Pk/K no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Carter Academy has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Griggs Ec/Pk/K there are 36 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by 21 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
