Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Griffin Elementary School, which is a part of TYLER ISD, with Ramey Elementary School, which is a part of TYLER ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Griffin Elementary School has a regular student population of 655 with a 16.2 students/teacher ratio while Ramey Elementary School has 547 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Griffin Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ramey Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 59 in student achievement, 66 in school progress, 69 in closing performance gaps and 67 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Griffin Elementary School and Ramey Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Griffin Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 67.48% of student population, followed by African Americans (27.18%), Whites or Caucasians (3.66%), Two or More Races (1.22%) and Native Americans (0.46%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Ramey Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 60.69% of student population, followed by African Americans (35.83%), Two or More Races (2.01%), Whites or Caucasians (1.28%) and Native Americans (0.18%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Griffin Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 98.17% compared to 97.07% at Ramey Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Griffin Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 44.27% of its student population compared to 38.76% at Ramey Elementary School.
Griffin Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 44.12%, gifted and talented students, 3.82%, while 8.40% are in the special education program. Ramey Elementary School bilingual students comprise 37.84%, gifted and talented students, 3.47%, and 8.96% are in the special education program.
40 teachers employed at Griffin Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.4 years.
