Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Fred Roberts Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Melillo Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Fred Roberts Middle School’s regular student population is 564 with a 12.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Melillo Middle School is 606 students and a 11.1 students/teacher ratio.
Fred Roberts Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Fred Roberts Middle School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and with 25% student progress. Melillo Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Fred Roberts Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 68.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.89%), Asians (7.45%), Whites or Caucasians (6.21%) and Two or More Races (2.13%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Melillo Middle School, Hispanics make up 69.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.35%), Asians (6.60%), Whites or Caucasians (6.11%), Two or More Races (1.49%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
Based on household incomes, Fred Roberts Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 76.06% compared to 61.88% at Melillo Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Fred Roberts Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 35.64% of its student population compared to 21.62% at Melillo Middle School.
In addition, Fred Roberts Middle School has 29.08% bilingual students, 8.51% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.13% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Melillo Middle School with 15.84% bilingual students, 11.22% gifted and talented students and 15.18% students in the special education program.
