Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Frazier Elementary School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Golden Acres Elementary School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Frazier Elementary School has a regular student population of 424 with a 11.4 students/teacher ratio while Golden Acres Elementary School has 371 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.5 students/teacher ratio.
Frazier Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 82 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Frazier Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Golden Acres Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Mathematics.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Frazier Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 78.77% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (8.49%), African Americans (8.25%), Asians (2.83%) and Two or More Races (1.42%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Golden Acres Elementary School, Hispanics make up 85.98% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (11.32%), African Americans (1.89%), Two or More Races (0.54%) and Asians (0.27%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Frazier Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 74.76% compared to 91.11% at Golden Acres Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Frazier Elementary School has 95 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 22.41% of student population. Golden Acres Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 145 or about 39.08% of student population.
In addition, Frazier Elementary School has 16.27% bilingual students, 4.25% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.04% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Golden Acres Elementary School with 36.66% bilingual students, 8.63% gifted and talented students and 9.16% students in the special education program.
