Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Fort Settlement Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Quail Valley Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Fort Settlement Middle School’s regular student population is 1,385 with a 19.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Quail Valley Middle School is 1,080 students and a 18.1 students/teacher ratio.
Fort Settlement Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 96 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Quail Valley Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 85 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Fort Settlement Middle School bagged all seven distinction awards in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Quail Valley Middle School’s six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Fort Settlement Middle School. They make up for 62.53% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (17.91%), Hispanics (7.94%), African Americans (6.86%), Two or More Races (4.12%) and Native Americans (0.65%).
The student population at Quail Valley Middle School is also predominantly by Asians at 35.09%, followed by African Americans (31.67%), Hispanics (18.15%), Whites or Caucasians (11.02%), Two or More Races (3.61%) and Native Americans (0.37%).
Based on household incomes, the Fort Settlement Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 13.50% compared to 40.74% at Quail Valley Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Fort Settlement Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 8.23% of its student population compared to 5.19% at Quail Valley Middle School.
In addition, Fort Settlement Middle School has 7.58% bilingual students, 19.93% are in the gifted and talented program, while 7.15% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Quail Valley Middle School with 4.44% bilingual students, 50.37% gifted and talented students and 9.26% students in the special education program.
Fort Settlement Middle School's 72 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.1 years. Teachers at Quail Valley Middle School, numbering 59 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Fort Settlement Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Quail Valley Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Fort Settlement Middle School there are 53 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Quail Valley Middle School there are 39 female teachers and 20 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
