A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Fort Settlement Middle School bagged all seven distinction awards in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. First Colony Middle School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Fort Settlement Middle School. They make up for 62.53% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (17.91%), Hispanics (7.94%), African Americans (6.86%), Two or More Races (4.12%) and Native Americans (0.65%).
The student population at First Colony Middle School is also predominantly by Asians at 42.47%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (18.96%), African Americans (16.52%), Hispanics (15.46%), Two or More Races (5.86%) and Native Americans (0.41%).
Based on household incomes, the Fort Settlement Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 13.50% compared to 30.19% at First Colony Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Fort Settlement Middle School has 114 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.23% of student population. First Colony Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 153 or about 12.45% of student population.
Fort Settlement Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 7.58%, gifted and talented students, 19.93%, while 7.15% are in the special education program. First Colony Middle School bilingual students comprise 12.37%, gifted and talented students, 7.65%, and 12.94% are in the special education program.

Teachers at First Colony Middle School, numbering 74 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.8 years.
