Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Ella J Baker Montessori School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Rucker Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Ella J Baker Montessori School has a regular student population of 565 with a 17.6 students/teacher ratio while Rucker Elementary School has 371 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.7 students/teacher ratio.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For Ella J Baker Montessori School these are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while Rucker Elementary School secured in Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Ella J Baker Montessori School. They make up for 42.30% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.15%), Asians (10.27%), African Americans (10.09%) and Two or More Races (6.19%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Rucker Elementary School, Hispanics make up 94.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.96%) and Whites or Caucasians (2.70%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Ella J Baker Montessori School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 36.81% compared to 95.96% at Rucker Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Ella J Baker Montessori School has 133 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.54% of student population. Rucker Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 187 or about 50.40% of student population.
Ella J Baker Montessori School’s bilingual students comprise 23.89%, gifted and talented students, 22.12%, while 12.57% are in the special education program. Rucker Elementary School bilingual students comprise 54.99%, gifted and talented students, 3.23%, and 13.48% are in the special education program.
