As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Dobie High School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with South Houston High School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Dobie High School’s regular student population is 3,870 with a student-teacher ratio of 15.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at South Houston High School is 2,311 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15 students/teacher ratio.
Dobie High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, South Houston High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Mathematics, Dobie High School earned one out of seven distinctions. South Houston High School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Dobie High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 66.25% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.34%), Asians (9.92%), Whites or Caucasians (5.01%), Two or More Races (1.32%) and Native Americans (0.05%).
At South Houston High School, Hispanics make up 85.37% of student population, followed by African Americans (11.47%), Whites or Caucasians (1.95%), Asians (0.61%), Two or More Races (0.39%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
Based on household incomes, the Dobie High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 58.53% compared to 79.36% at South Houston High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Dobie High School has 482 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 12.45% of student population. South Houston High School has significantly more ELLs at 634 or about 27.43% of student population.
Dobie High School’s bilingual students comprise 10.57%, gifted and talented students, 6.28%, while 9.90% are in the special education program. South Houston High School bilingual students comprise 26.05%, gifted and talented students, 3.68%, and 10.82% are in the special education program.
Dobie High School's 245 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.5 years. South Houston High School's 153 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10 years.
Of its teaching staff, Dobie High School has 11 teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 32 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 82 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 59 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 50 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 13 beginning teachers. South Houston High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 39 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 32 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 51 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 17 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Dobie High School employs 141 female teachers and 103 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 37 special education teachers are being assisted by 34 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs 13 staff members in the school administration department and 34 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, South Houston High School employs 80 female teachers and 73 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 27 special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs eight staff members in the school administration department and 20 more working as school support staff.
