As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. Taking on their interests and passions help to shape the critical decisions they need to make as they plan their future.
When we compared Delta Academy, which is a part of EL PASO ISD, with Silva Health Magnet, which is a part of EL PASO ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Delta Academy’s regular student population is 37 with a student-teacher ratio of 2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Silva Health Magnet is 585 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.4 students/teacher ratio.
Silva Health Magnet earned a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 96 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for Delta Academy.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Silva Health Magnet's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Delta Academy has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Delta Academy is Hispanics who make up nearly 97.30% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.70%). There is no Asians, Native Americans, Two or More Races and Whites or Caucasians students in the school.
At Silva Health Magnet, Hispanics make up 87.86% of student population, followed by Asians (4.27%), Whites or Caucasians (3.93%), African Americans (2.74%) and Two or More Races (0.85%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Delta Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 59.46% compared to 64.27% at Silva Health Magnet.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Delta Academy has 17 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 45.95% of student population. Silva Health Magnet has significantly more ELLs at 64 or about 10.94% of student population.
In addition, Delta Academy has 35.14% bilingual students, 2.70% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.22% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Silva Health Magnet with 9.40% bilingual students, 23.93% gifted and talented students and 1.54% students in the special education program.
Delta Academy's 18 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.8 years. Silva Health Magnet's 40 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 14.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Delta Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Silva Health Magnet has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Delta Academy employs nine female teachers and eight male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two teachers are in special education without any assistance. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and two more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Silva Health Magnet employs 27 female teachers and 12 male teachers. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
