As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. Taking on their interests and passions help to shape the critical decisions they need to make as they plan their future.
When we compared Delta Academy, which is a part of EL PASO ISD, with Coronado High School, which is a part of EL PASO ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Delta Academy’s regular student population is 37 with a student-teacher ratio of 2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Coronado High School is 2,508 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.3 students/teacher ratio.
Coronado High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 87 in student achievement, 87 in school progress and 83 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for Delta Academy.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Coronado High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Delta Academy has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Delta Academy is Hispanics who make up nearly 97.30% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.70%). There is no Asians, Native Americans, Two or More Races and Whites or Caucasians students in the school.
At Coronado High School, Hispanics make up 84.53% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (11.68%), Asians (1.56%), African Americans (1.08%), Two or More Races (0.92%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, Delta Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 59.46% compared to 53.51% at Coronado High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Delta Academy has 17 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 45.95% of student population. Coronado High School has significantly more ELLs at 661 or about 26.36% of student population.
In addition, Delta Academy has 35.14% bilingual students, 2.70% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.22% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Coronado High School with 22.77% bilingual students, 17.42% gifted and talented students and 7.26% students in the special education program.
Delta Academy's 18 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 12.8 years. Coronado High School's 136 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 11.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 13.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Delta Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Coronado High School has six teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 23 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 50 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 22 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 32 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
Delta Academy has two special education teachers assisted by 0 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Coronado High School has three special education teachers and 8 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
